Benefits Annual Enrollment

Tellabs advances telecommunications networks to meet the evolving needs of users. Broadband solutions from Tellabs enable service providers to deliver high-quality voice, video and data services over wireline and wireless networks around the world. Tellabs was founded in 1974 and is headquartered in Naperville, Illinois.

The Project

The project consisted of implementing benefits open enrollment via the SAP Enterprise Portal using standard SAP functionality and an enhanced front-end interface. The company retired the existing bolt-on benefits application and replaced it with standard SAP self-service functionality. The four-month project included a user interface prototype, development/build, load (e.g. performance) and system testing, and deployment of the solution. The project’s goal was to implement an intuitive self-service benefits enrollment solution for all eligible Tellabs employees.

The Solution

Tellabs engaged Worklogix to assist in designing the front-end prototype as well as developing and deploying the solution. The open enrollment application was re-faced to provide a more intuitive user-experience. Employees now use a wizard-like, step-by-step process that takes them through “Four Easy Steps” to enroll in benefits. All updates made by employees were performed in real-time against the SAP backend. The HR Employee Services team was available during the enrollment window to answer questions.

Business Benefits

Implementing self-service benefits enrollment through the SAP Enterprise Portal increased employees’ awareness of self service applications, which aligns with Tellabs’ global HR strategic goals. Tellabs also optimized the implementation by integrating benefits systems into existing landscapes including the SAP HR and the SAP Enterprise Portal. External feeds are no longer needed for a bolt-on product. Tellabs maintains and owns the solution in-house and realized immediate cost savings. Enhancements to the self-service module where reinforced with a series of new context-sensitive help links. System users can easily navigate through the help documents to find answers ranging from special plan considerations to detailed instructions on how to enroll. During the open enrollment window, almost 25% of users accessed the online help, reducing calls to the service center. Tellabs considers this year’s open enrollment cycle as one of the most successful.
