Performance Management
Brown-Forman is an independent, publicly-traded producer and marketer of premium spirits, wines, and other adult beverages as well as premier luggage. The core mission of the client is to produce and market many of the most well-known and best-loved wines and spirits in the world as well as manufacture and market consumer products such as luggage and leather goods.
The Challenge
Worklogix was engaged to work with the HRIS team, who is responsible for the deployment and support of all Human Resources applications within the company.
The primary challenge was to transform the existing form-based performance management process into a collaborative online process on the SAP Enterprise Portal that allowed employees and managers to set, review, and approve objectives and conduct evaluations. In addition, the organizational hierarchy had to be optimized in order for workflow routing to function effectively. Additionally, the SAP system needed to be enhanced to allow workflow notifications via the corporate email system.
The Solution
Worklogix assisted in the requirement gathering, design, configuration and deployment of the SAP performance management application. The appraisal solution was comprised of components including objective setting, weighting, past accomplishments, part appraiser feedback as well as an overall performance metric from the final appraiser, which will be used for their performance-based compensation payout process.
Business Benefits
Specific benefits to end-users are outlined below:
- Replacement of the current form-based performance management process - the entire process was moved online to the SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0, including all aspects of the performance management review: objective setting, cascading goals, self-rating and part and final appraiser feedback.
- The functionality was delivered via the company’s employee portal, a medium already familiar to the end user, with ample online help to guide the user through the process. Training materials also provided the appraisee and appraiser with step by step help with the process.
- Managers were able to view the appraisal documents for all their direct and indirect reports in all statuses (i.e. those appraisals still "in process" and those "complete") throughout the process.
- HR Managers were given a display-only view of appraisal documents of all employees within their client group. This facilitated discussion between the manager and the HR manager if a question or issue arose during the process.
- As per 21 CFR Part 11 requirements, an audit trail was maintained throughout the entire process. An action log is available for administrators to determine who updated what and when.
Specific benefits to the HRIS team include:
- Appraisal templates are reusable, as they can be quickly and easily copied, adjusted, and released from year to year.
- Administrative access gives the HRIS team flexibility for changing the status of the appraisal or removing erroneous appraisals if the need exists during the planning or review process. Also, an appraisal can be prepared by the HRIS team in special cases where the appraiser is not the manager of the appraisee.
- By utilizing Worklogix's remote services and performance management reference implementation, the solution proved more cost effective.
